Philosophy Forum 21/09/2017: Spar and Line

Dear All

before you all ask, no this isn’t an invite for substance abuse at the convenience store opposite the university library. It is in fact an invitation to spend next week’s philosophy forum time exploring the exhibition (Spar and Line) of our very own Geoff Matthews.

The idea is that forum members could meet at the Sam Scorer Gallery at the usual time of 14:15. We can then peruse and discuss the work. If time/circumstance permit we could possibly stop for a drink (though this part is in no way necessary). I don’t think giving an specific end time makes as much sense as usual and though there is no reading, some of the recent Malikean and Laruellean artistic speculations could feed into discussion about the work.

Sam Scorer gallery website is here.

Link to a short Malik piece here (if anyone would like to read it).

Non-standard aesthetics piece here (“).

hope to see you there

Philosophy Forum 14/09/2017 -Suhail Malik: Ontology of Finance (pt 2)

Dear All

This week we’ll take a look a little further into Malik’s document. This week I’m releasing the whole thing with the suggestion that we read from where we left off (p668) up until p735. If anyone does have the time to consume the whole thing they should feel free to do so but other wise 669-735 will suffice.

We do have a room change next week -we’re in group room 3. The meeting is at the usual time of 14:15-15:45.

best wishes

Philosophy Forum 31/08/2017 -Keith Tilford: Laruelle, Art and the Scientific Method

Dear All

so Laruelle is still hanging in there but Tilford’s essay looks interesting and it concerns art (Tilford is an artist) which we talked about extensively, science (which we’ve been confused about in relation to Laruelle) and Laruelle (which we’ve been confused about in relation to Laruelle).

I have a feeling Althusser could be on the horizon soon but for now let’s meet in UL102 at 14:15-15:45 and discuss this first.

Philosophy Forum 24/08/2017: Identity and Event

Dear All

so look, I know I was all ‘Laruelle season is nearly over’ and then I reneged on it a bit. I really thought it was about done, and I promise this isn’t turning into the non-philosophy forum.

However there was a request for more event type things and when I had a look for ereignis and Laruelle this paper came up and frankly I couldn’t resist it -a bit more reneging isn’t going to hurt is it?. Maybe (as it is once more by the man himself) it will be so incomprehensibly awful it will put an end to this business but let’s give it a try eh?

Extra fun Laruelle reading

Dear All

if you are feeling intrigued generally by this whole business then I can recommend these short articles. They are, by contrast to ‘the transcendental computer’, extremely easy to read.
