Philosophy Forum 03/03/2016 -Graham Harman: Vicarious Causation

Dear All

next week the forum will be looking at some more of Graham Harman’s work in the form of his article entitled ‘Vicarious Causation’. This deals -as I understand it- with his attempt to reformulate occasionalism without God. The meeting will be at the slightly earlier time of 13:15-14:45 in the usual place UL102 and the reading is available here.

best wishes

Graham

Philosophy Forum 25/02/2016 -Graham Harman: Various Readings

Dear All

This week will see the first focussed discussion in the forum’s speculative season. The meeting will attempt to deal with Graham Harman’s position and to this end I am recommending reading this interview and pages 31-42 (the pdf pages not the pages that appear in the pdf) of this transcript of the original Goldsmith’s meeting.

If people want to read more, Harman has a lot of material free online that can be downloaded from his blog.

The meeting will be UL102 14:15-15:45.

With best wishes

Graham

Philosophy Forum 18/02/2016 -Bryant, Harman, Srnicek: Towards a Speculative Philosophy

Dear All

this week sees the start of the forum’s first foray into what will probably be it’s longest dwelling within a particular area. This area is the relatively new speculative realism or object oriented philosophy as it is also known as. Over the coming weeks we’re going to examine some of the different strands of this thought giving the opportunity of for attendees to get to grips with the central (and hopefully peripheral too) issues herein.

The first discussion will be on the opening essay in the open access volume ‘The Speculative Turn’, entitled ‘Towards a Speculative Philosophy’ which will hopefully lay the groundwork for deeper engagements.

The meeting will be in UL102 14:15-15:45 and the reading is available here.

With best wishes

Graham
