Philosophy Forum 29/10/2015 -Jean-Paul Sartre: Existential Psychoanalysis

Dear All

Finally abandoning Badiou to the void, the forum will pick up on a thread previously explored only in a German sphere. This time however it is not Boss and Binswanger’s existential psychoanalytic experiment but rather Sartre’s. To be honest I didn’t know he advocated such a turn for psychoanalysis so I’m grateful to Alain for drawing my attention to this.

So this week we will be reading the section of Being and Nothingness entitled Existential Psychoanalysis which is section I of chapter 2 of part 4.

To be clear (and distinct) the meeting will be on Thursday the 29th of October 14:15-15:45 in UL102.

Wednesday’s meeting and another bombshell

Dear All

Owing to library management booting us out of the room, this week the forum will be moving to Group room 3.

The other bombshell is that as I will no longer be working enough of wednesday to make it viable to run the forum on that day, I am currently looking at running it thursday 2-4 (well 2:15, you know what I mean). Given a torrent of dissent I do have some moveability within Thursday itself, but I don’t really have another viable day.

This will apply from next week onwards.

With best wishes

Philosophy Forum 21/10/2015 -Alain Badiou: Preface to ‘The Adventure of French Philosophy’

Dear All

I feel like a dog with a bone he can’t put down with this Badiou business, except Badiou isn’t just a bone, even a juicy bone, he’s a whole carcass, though possibly since he’s still alive the whole likening him, even his work, to some kind of meat isn’t really very kind, but then, equally I’m not a dog so maybe it is ok?

Anyway, this time it’s Alain  himself doing the talking in the preface to his much lauded ‘Adventure of French Philosophy’ which can be found here.

The meeting will be in UL102 14:15-15:45

With best wishes

Philosophy Forum 14/10/2015

Dear All

After the trauma (not a solar trauma) of the Brassier paper I’d like to take a more general step backwards and suggest that we read the introduction to the book of essays that produced last week’s selection.

Another excellent accessible set of writings on Badiou seems to be Andrew Robinson’s series in ceasefire magazine’s a-z of theory. These can be dipped into here.

As usual the meeting will be in UL102 14:15-15:45

Philosophy Forum -07/10/2015: More Badiou

Dear All

the forum will continue its investigations into Badiou by looking at two papers from Think Again: Alain Badiou and the Future of Philosophy.  The essays in question are essay 3 ‘Nihil Unbound: Remarks on Subtractive Ontology and
Thinking Capitalism’ Ray Brassier and ‘Alain Badiou and the Miracle of the Event’  by Daniel Bensaid.  The reading is available here and the meeting will be as usual in UL102 14:15-15:45
